RESILIENCE
Planning for Change through My Plan After 50
An expert on resilience puts it succinctly: in life, change is constant; adapting to change is optional. How adaptable—resilient—are you? Perhaps more fundamentally, why does personal planning related to our resilience rank as one of the eight elements essential for a vibrant life after 50? After all, don’t we get to become more stuck in our ways as a privilege of aging and of retirement life?
Consider some of the inevitable changes that will confront you during your life after 50: changes in your physical health over the years; loss of identity, routine, time management and other personal benefits of work should you enter a retirement; possible changes to your financial situation and place of residence; changes in family dynamics; loss of friends, parents, perhaps even a life partner to death.
Many people take resilience for granted, or simply don’t think about it. Some adopt the change-resistant attitude of Popeye (“I yam what I yam.”), or the curmudgeon-like personality of Dennis the Menace’s inflexible neighbor, Mr. Wilson. These are choices that underscore that adapting to change is optional.
But resilience is a skill that can be developed and enhanced through planning and effort. A personal coach can be an invaluable resource in this regard, providing support for one’s efforts to increase one’s resiliency. Whether to enhance enjoyment of a retirement lifestyle or for overall personal growth, increasing your resilience quotient will add value and vibrancy to your life.
